Our experience is not only technical, but covers project management and product
management and senior members of our team have all brought products to market which
have shipped in tens of millions of devices.
Leveraging our knowledge and combined decades of experience and understanding of
mobile Symsource are uniquely poised to be the partner of choice for companies wanting
to develop mobile solutions across multiple platforms – iPhone, Symbian OS, Android, Java,
BlackBerry and Windows Mobile.
Symsource builds both standalone applications, and integrated application suites, while our long history of building and customising ARM based platforms such as Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and Linux means we can work below the Android runtime layer too. From multimedia codecs and RTSP stacks to input methods and core operating system components, in short Symsource is your perfect partner for bringing bespoke Android devices to market, and not just mobile phones. We can customise application suites to match a range of device reference designs, from photo frames to satnavs, netbooks to tablets and laptops to pagers, all powered by Android.
Symsource is one of the few companies outside North America familiar with building
software and custom applications that take advantage of the unique features of
the BlackBerry platform. To date we have worked on numerous projects from enterprise
mobility to real time financial data. We design and develop Java-based applications
that are native to the BlackBerry platform, coupled with our strong UI pedigree
from working on multiple platforms to enhance the application's appeal and usability.
As a BlackBerry Alliance member we also specialize in application development for
Research in Motion's popular BlackBerry range, using both MIDP and the BlackBerry
Java API.
The iPhone represents one of the most seismic shifts in the constantly evolving
mobile landscape to date. The AppStore channel (which generates sales of $1m per day)
further increases customer expectation of quality and usability & integration –
providing a compelling opportunity for companies to leverage this exciting product
proposition.
An early member of Apple’s iPhone Developer Program, Symsource has been at the forefront
of iPhone development work in the UK having invested heavily in cross training and
acquiring the skills necessary to develop first class iPhone applications. We’re
committed to hiring a diverse range of engineers with a strong background in UI
& desktop experience and we already have a number of commercial iPhone projects
underway including real time financial data feeds, enterprise solutions, web services
clients and multimedia offerings.
Building on the foundation of OS X and marrying it with a multitouch specific UI
layer, Apple is calling the collection of APIs "Cocoa Touch". Whilst the iPhone
may have its roots in the desktop – its software architecture means that without
a strong pedigree in mobile software development companies may struggle to leverage
the true capabilities of the iPhone. Furthermore both the iPhone and S60 provide
support for native C and C++ at the ‘model’ or ‘engine’ level allows for the practical
reuse of core code – adding another platform to your product portfolio thus providing
a greater ROI.
The Symsource engineering team has a thorough and road-tested knowledge of mobile
phone OS development, not only as application and middleware engineers, but as original
members of the Symbian OS software development group - the people who designed and
implemented the OS - Symsource are uniquely poised to be the partner of choice for
companies wanting to develop iPhone solutions.
With an installed base of well over 2.1 billion mobile phones and other handheld
devices (source: Ovum), Java remains by far the most accessible and popular development
platform in the Mobile space.
Symsource's team of industry-recognized Java experts have provided Consultancy and
Development services to some of the largest players in the Mobile ecosystem. Our
deep understanding of constrained environments and the J2ME framework enables us
to provide assistance in all stages of the project lifecycle, whether it be initial
feasibility, functional specification, product development, or code review and optimization
of an existing product.
Particular areas of expertise, derived from both our own product portfolio, and
working with external clients, includes OTA synchronization, PIM integration and
Messaging, as well extensive experience of writing portable applications deployed
across a wide range of handsets from all leading manufacturers. As a BlackBerry
Alliance member we also specialize in application development for Research in Motion's
popular BlackBerry range, using both MIDP and the BlackBerry Java API.
Symsource has one of the richest pedigrees and highest levels of expertise in Symbian
OS development available. The company was founded by a combination of ex-Symbian
staff who have worked in the mobile industry for many years, originally creating
and launching Symbian’s very own partner support function.
Every member of our Symbian OS engineering team is also an Accredited Symbian Developer
and Accredited S60 Developer where appropriate. Our team of engineers is led by
some of the original architects of Symbian OS, responsible for the messaging, PIM,
Device Management and Java subsystems. Our ability to combine cool technology with
an understanding of mobile devices' constrained bandwidth, power and performance
is highly valued by our diverse customer base.
Symsource is regularly engaged in major Symbian OS development projects targetting
both S60 and UIQ variants, from major subsystem architecture projects to application
development, as well as to review and supervise the work of others. Examples of
the technologies used in our recent projects include VoIP, Instant Messaging, Location
mapping, Video-on-Demand, N-Gage gaming and Device Management.
Symsource and Symbian have also co-authored a number of white papers which are published
on the Symbian Developer Network. Click below to read the latest:
Windows Mobile continues to be the platform of choice for application specific mobile
devices tightly integrated into the enterprise or FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence)
offerings, and Windows Mobile 7 promises to be the best mobile Windows yet.
Symsource specialises in building FMC applications on Windows Mobile, including:
• VoIP built on both
SIP and proprietary technologies.
• Instant messaging
and SMS-over-IP.
• Call redirection.
• Application provisioning
and OTA configuration.
Porting to/from Symbian and iPhone platforms is also available, and for cross platform
engagements we will take common codeline approach sharing generic C and C++ engine
code wherever appropriate.
Web and Server technologies
It’s extremely rare for a mobile application to be stand alone. In the age of Web
2.0, Connected Applications are often just one part of a larger system providing
data feeds and communications functions, and built using a combination of native
and web based technologies. Such applications behave as if they are Always On, utilising
IMS and Push technologies to deliver information in real time for business critical
applications to consumer services that can be enriched with location and context.
But Always On means always using power, bandwidth and other resources that are limited,
and the variety of additional inputs, from camera to GPS represent a further burden.
Symsource's experience in architecting key parts of the the world's most efficient
mobile operating system means we have the knowhow to design the most efficient solutions,
minimising any detriment to the user's day to day experience with their mobile device.
Symsource has invested heavily in building the capability to deliver true end to
end systems, incorporating server based technologies, web services APIs and mobile
web 2.0 technologies including widgets and runtime environments such as Flash Lite
and Python.
If your design calls for LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python), web services,
AJAX, web content and widgets then Symsource can deliver.
